The All-Terrain
Vehicle (ATV)
An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a vehicle that travels on low pressure tires, with a seat that is straddled by the operator, along with handlebars for steering control. As the name implies, it is designed to handle a wider variety of terrain than most other vehicles. It is intended for use by a single operator.
The rider sits on and operates these vehicles like a motorcycle, but the extra wheels give more stability at slower speeds.
Advocates of ATVs argue that starting younger improves safety. They recommend that children can develop the necessary expertise by starting at as young as 6 years of age instead of waiting until age 18. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has approved the sale of sub-50cc ATVs for use by children as young as the age of 6.
